Who is as excited as I am that we now have ONTARIO fresh corn in season! Many farms in the local area are going to be serving up the best corn there is to get. Nothing better then an August evening with fresh Ontario corn on the menu to go along with whatever is on the BBQ. Corn Roast season is here… I hope you all get to enjoy a cob or a dozen.
A few local spots that are not to be missed this summer if you haven’t visited them already! Springridge Farms is another great local spot to take the entire family. Starting with the Fun Farm Yard – you can’t beat an educational, safe and fun place for people of all ages. The fun farm includes many different fun things to do such as a spider web climber, giant sandbox, farm yard tube slides, farm animals, witch’s mouth corn trail, stray play area, escarpment lookout, a 40’ windmill, antique tractors great for photos, the singing chicken show, and goat mountain… and every farm fun yard experience includes a tractor drawn wagon ride! Admission to the fun farm yard is $5 per person 2-92; there are also season’s passes available either for an individual or 4 person pass – I have the pass this year and it has been so worth it. We have enjoyed many days of playing in the large Sandbox and my Son loves the tractor rides!
Something not to miss at Springridge are the amazing eats! There is a bakery/café that serves pies and pastries, a delish lunch menu and also they have the BBQ barn (available on weekends) and they even have a children’s menu which includes the popular Sandbox Lunch (Sandwich, carrot sticks, drink and a cookie.. and best part is its served in a souvenir pail and shovel to play in the play yard with). There are also many preserves and items available in the gift shop – there is something for everyone on your list here… whether a birthday, hostess gift or even (gasp) for those early shoppers Christmas items… this is a great shopping experience.
Another local Gem – Chudleigh’s. People come from all over the place to visit Chudleigh’s! Chudleigh’s has been around since 1957 and since then as evolved from just a pick your own fruit farm to an amazing place with many exciting events. Three generations have run this locally owned farm!! And they have even expanded to have a full pie factory here in town as well!
Picking your own apples is always a fun event for the entire family. There is nothing better than picking those apples and enjoying your selection afterwards at home to eat, bake in pies and maybe even a game of bobbing for apples. There is a large selection in the types of apples Chudleigh’s has available and they start picking for Mid-August, this can be found at http://www.chudleighs.com/index.php/farm-events/pick-your-own/ Their delicious apples are also available in their retail market bagged and loose for picking. There are already quite a few varieties to choose from.
If thinking of coming to Chudleigh’s for the day there are many activities to keep you busy. There is a picnic area, licensed waterfall dining area with country lunches served every day, children’s entertainment and play area, retail store and pie shop and best of all free parking… be sure to bring your own wagon.
The children’s entertainment farm features some pretty exciting things! There are 4 slides, and a climbing area with 2 towers and a bridge, a straw maze, great retired tractors that are great for pictures, horse tire swings, a sand pit, there are friendly farm animals, balloons available on weekends, tractor wagon rides, and a Nature trail walk. There are pony rides available every day from 11am – 4pm (weather permitting) for $4. Chudleigh’s is open every day from 10am until 5pm from July 1st until October 31st including all holidays. Admission to Chudleigh’s is available per day cost, or there is a season’s pass available (which covers a family of 4). Access to the garden or bakery area and retail store is free. And please remember all outside food is allowed on premises. I have already been and purchased apples this year, next buy is apples for that first pie in the oven. I cannot wait for that wonderful smell throughout my house – and one that can be smelled at Chudleigh’s every single day!
Looking forward to September and the many events that come our way – more apple picking and who can forget the annual Milton Fall Fair.
Happy August Milton!

Well, we are 3 months into 2016… can you believe it? Crazy how time passes by so fast when we are having so much fun!!. We hope that you have kept yourselves entertained since the Christmas holidays have passed, and keeping busy with all the fun local events that have occurred since January. February was a month filled with Valentine’s Day warming our hearts, and a family day filled with events.
Some signs that spring is on its way are finally here. Starting this Sunday the Maple Syrup festival begins! Fresh Ontario maple syrup begins flowing at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. The maple syrup festivities are open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every weekend in March and from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily through March Break. Enjoy a guided tour of the Maple Lane, where 1890s costumed interpreters demonstrate how to tap maple trees, make maple syrup and maple sugar. View artifacts in the maple museum or tour the 100-year-old Spruce Lane Farmhouse – a sight everyone needs to see! Be sure to browse through all of the delicious maple products and souvenirs available in the Maple Gift Shoppe and pick up a bottle of syrup to take home for those pancakes you will be craving as well as any maple baking you have planned… my lists are endless! Hop on a wagon that will take you to a heated pancake house where you can enjoy fresh, hot pancakes with pure maple syrup and sausages, served up throughout the festival hours. There are many different events within this festival as well. Don’t forget to check out the Sweet Water Season at Crawford Lake – Visit the reconstructed Iroquoian Village and learn how maple syrup was discovered and used by Ontario’s First Peoples as you take in an interactive (and edible!) Sweet Water demonstration!! Something that cannot be missed. Nostalgia is served warm and gooey in the afternoon as staff will demonstrate how to make taffy on snow – at least this is one good use for all that white stuff hanging around. Visit and explore the Mountsberg Sugar Bush to see historical and modern methods of tapping, collecting and boiling sap to make delicious syrup. Take in a maple candy making session, travel on a horse-drawn ride through the bush to learn about this special forest and how it is cared for. Finish off your visit with a stop at the Pancake Pavilion for a plate of mouth-watering flap jacks covered in pure maple syrup. A real Canadian tradition – and well, something delicious you could feast not only your eyes but your belly on! You shouldn’t miss this at all. An event for the whole family to enjoy.
Tuesday, March 8th , 2015 marks the start of registration for spring/summer programming for fitness and general interest with the Town of Milton. Internet and phone registration for Town of Milton spring/summer fitness and general interest programming kicks off at 6:00 am – make sure you set those alarms as I have heard that certain programs do fill up quickly. Walk-in registration also starts at 9:00 am at the Milton Leisure Centre (Main Street), Milton Sports Centre (Derry Road), and Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre. Additional information is available in the Town of Milton Community Services Guide, online at www.milton.ca and at all Town facilities. The costs vary by program but there is something out there for everyone! Did you know that the town of Milton actually does have some DROP IN events for children available… as a Stay-At-Home mom I was happy to see so many programs available throughout the week that I can just drop in to.. no need to register, and even better, when we are having a slow morning or little ones are sick – you can just pick a different day that week to go or skip the week altogether.. Thomas and I plan on trying a few of these out over the next few months.
Looking for things to do this March Break? Stay active over the March Break at one of the many town facilities. There are many additional programs running throughout the week – things for children of all ages. For a full schedule of all drop-in programs be sure to check out the website (http://www.milton.ca/en/play/resources/Drop-in-march-break-2016.pdf) There are also some free skate nights at the arenas in Milton on Saturday March 19th and Sunday March 20th, a great way to get some exercise in and enjoy time with our family and friends.
Leprechauns, Celtic Music, and green beer! Who doesn’t like to pretend we are all Irish for a day, wear green, drink green beer and enjoy an evening out with friends. There are a few local places that can help bring out the Irish in anyone!
Ned Devines provides the sincerest of welcomes, an unsurpassed pint of Guinness, plus a varied selection of traditional Irish cuisine and pub fare will ensure that a “mighty” time will be had by all. Did you know they even host trivia nights on Mondays – and when thinking spring – there is nothing better than their rooftop patio for a pint, watching the sunset and some good ol’ Irish grub – and if you venture on a Saturday – there is usually some great live (AND LOCAL) music/bands to be had.
Another great Irish Bar that always comes to mind is The Ivy Arms – Where People come to meet. They are a laid-back; customer oriented Irish-Style watering hole with a street side patio, plus delicious food featuring live music and karaoke nights.
Make sure no matter where you will be drinking a Green Pint – that you are wearing that green shirt so you don’t get pinched – as well as have a ride home from a fabulous friend who is being your DD for the night or that you are calling one of Milton’s fine cab companies for your ride home that evening. Have some fun, but please always play safe. If staying home with children is what you will be doing – here are some of my family’s favorites for celebrating… Green Velvet Cupcakes for dessert, maybe green milk, my dad would even make us shamrock pancakes!
Also – for all the Moms out there… Famiizuu Milton is hosting its Spring Mom-To-Mom Sale on Saturday, March 19th from 8:30 -11:30am at Wee Ones Childcare Academy. It’s a sale all Milton Moms wait for – an opportunity where moms sell their gently used kid items at a great price, and where other moms get to re-stock their children’s closets and toy chests without breaking the bank! There are even goody bags to the first 100 people through the door. Admission is $2 for non-Momstown members and only $1 for members. It is a cash only event, and come prepared as line ups to get in and the best deals are always a bonus for arriving early… the early bird gets the worm as they say.
Who doesn’t enjoy EVERY SINGLE Downtown Milton event? Well if you are anything like me you won’t be missing the Downtown Milton Easter Egg Hunt happening on Saturday, March 27th. Come and celebrate spring in downtown Milton by hunting for Easter treats at local participating businesses. Start your searching escapades at Mill Pond and “Hop” around Downtown while discovering the unique collection of shops, services and wonderful places to eat. Be sure to bring your own Easter Basket and Bunny ears. A free event for everyone!
Easter Festival activities begin on Good Friday March 25, Saturday March 26 and Sunday March 27 from 10am-4pm. Experience the magic of Easter with activities the whole family will enjoy at the one and only Springridge Farm. Admission to Easter Festival is $12 per person from ages 2-92, and includes: Egg Hunt with the Bunny, Eggcellent Easter Professional Puppet Show, Bunny Face Painting, Bunny Ears to Wear, Baby Animals, Wagon Rides, Fun Farm Yard featuring giant tube slides, animal barn, sandbox, Escarpment lookout, singing chicken show, goat mountain & so much more! Forget old man winter the minute you step inside the 19th century barn with a fresh selection of gourmet foods, baked goods, giftware and garden décor for springtime! Don’t forget that they always expect Good Friday to be extremely busy and recommend planning your visit for the Saturday or Sunday. For more information please visit www.springridgefarm.com or call 905-878-4908/e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
Whatever you are doing for the Month of March I would like to pass this Irish Blessing onto you all:
May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow,
and may troubles avoid you where you go.
May your pockets be heavy, and your heart be light,
and may goodluck pursue you each morning and night.
May your troubles be less and your blessings be more,
and nothing but happiness come through your door.
Cheers & Happy Easter!
This is by far my favourite Conservation Halton programs of the year!
